monday miscellany

Hi!

Time for semi-random stuff.

1) It was nice out this weekend. By nice, I mean that the ground is still snow-covered, but at least the temperature was in the 40s and it was sunny. At this point we take whatever we can get. Still waiting for spring.

2) Speaking of waiting for spring, Henry and I went to Trader Joe's on Saturday and found some pretty flowers. Hyacinths are my favorite, and since those sneaky Trader Joe's people know how impatiently I've been waiting for spring, they put several pots of them just inside the entrance. So now our house smells like spring, even if there is snow outside still.

3) Chris's parents came over yesterday, which was nice because we got some extra things done around the house. I got lunches packed and dinner pre-made for today, and Chris and I took a walk and got to go to Target by ourselves during Henry's nap.

4) After Target, we went home and carved up a foam mattress.

What? Is that not what you do when you get home from Target?

This was possibly the best idea we've ever had when it comes to repurposing unwanted household items. Yesterday morning I rearranged the living room for the umpteenth time. I can never get the furniture placement to look right. I finally decided to get rid of the love seat that we don't like and never use, and keep just the couch. (We hate the couch too. Oh well.) We got the furniture used for next to nothing, figuring we'd eventually replace it with new stuff. So after I moved the couch we were talking about how crappy it was and decided to try getting a slipcover for it. We got the slipcover at Target, and it mostly fit fine except the seat cushions were too deep to fit in the cover. We thought about cutting the cushions to fit, but then had an even better idea. The memory foam mattress sitting in the basement that we can't seem to find a good way to get rid of? Perfect couch cushion material! An hour later we had a new couch. It is so much nicer looking and more comfortable. I will show pictures at some point. And it will be kind of funny when guests sit on that couch and say, "Is this....memory foam?"

5) We also discovered that an upside-down love seat makes for a fantastic fort.
