Last night Chris and I went to the Red Sox game with a couple of friends. When we lived right in the city we went to lots of games. We don't get into Boston often these days, and I always get very nostalgic when we're there. I have memories tied to every neighborhood and nearly every street in the city. Boston feels like home to me more than any other place. I couldn't have been happier walking through the city to Fenway, taking in all the familiar sights and sounds.
All sports fans are crazy about their favorite teams, but in Boston we are especially, deeply in love with ours. While in some cities the stadiums are never full, at Fenway Park the stadium overflows to standing room only at every game. Fenway has set the Major League record for number of consecutive sold out games. A Red Sox game is an event! Red Sox fans cheer hard. They care about every play. They take errors as personal affronts. They celebrate every hit and every out with all they've got.
Even without the fans, Fenway Park is a special place in itself. It's the oldest professional sports venue in use in the country. There is so much history tied to the park. Because it's so old and has been through several additions and renovations, it has all kinds of quirks that newer parks don't have. The park is full of odd angles and unique features that make playing a ball game there a little unusual.
We got home very late last night, but it was worth the trip. There's nothing like a game at Fenway.
