one year

Henry Boy is one year old!

Stats: Henry weighs 19 lbs 2 oz and is 28 1/2 inches long. I forget the percentiles he was at, but weight was somewhere below the 20th. His 12 month clothes are now starting to fit well, and he's still in size 3 diapers. He now has five teeth: Three on top and two on bottom. Henry's hair is growing in a little more and it's still very red.

Schedule: Henry wakes up between 6:20 and 6:45. He nurses around 7:00, plays and gets dressed, and has breakfast at 8:00. Morning nap is at 9:00. After nap he nurses again around 11 or 11:30, and has lunch at 12:00. Afternoon nap is around 1:30. Henry nurses again around 3:00 or 3:30, and plays until dinner time at 6:00. Then he has a bath if we're doing one that night, and starts getting ready for bed at 7:00. Bedtime is by 7:30. The dude usually wakes up looking for his binky sometime during the night, and most nights we're still in the habit of nursing once sometime between 3 and 4:30 am. I'm thinking we'll stop that pretty soon. There's no reason for him to eat during the night now. It's just our habit. Hopefully he'll start sleeping through the night more often once we cut out the feeding.

Motor Development: Henry's fine motor skills are getting to be pretty good. He can pick up very small objects with a pincer grasp. He can put objects on top of things, like putting a toy care on the Little People garage, putting a ball in the top of his tree toy, and putting a block on top of a tower. He likes throwing and putting objects into containers. Henry isn't close to standing and walking by himself yet, but he cruises and pulls up anywhere. He walks pushing a push toy.

Feeding: Henry eats almost everything we do. For breakfast he likes muffins, pancakes without syrup, toast with nut butter and a little jam, cheerios, and fruit. For lunch he eats nut butter sandwiches, hummus sandwiches, pasta, dinner leftovers, fruit, and vegetables. At dinner he has whatever we're eating. The only things he doesn't like are broccoli and cauliflower, and I think it's because he doesn't like the texture. Henry still nurses and we will probably continue that on some level until age 2. I've also introduced a blend of almond and coconut milk, and he likes that too. He drinks well from a sippy cup.

Social/Communication: Henry points all the time. He sometimes points in the air and all around him while babbling, and looks like he's giving a speech. He often points to something and "talks" about it. I can tell he's trying to label things. His latest word is "light". (He likes pointing to lights.) Henry definitely says "Dada" consistently now. He says "Mama" less often. He is very talkative, babbling all day long and using adult inflection in his "speech". He understands several words and phrases related to things he uses often and his daily routine. He makes some of the gestures in familiar songs like Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Cognitive/Play: Henry pushes cars and trucks back and forth, or crawls while pushing them. He puts blocks on top of a tower (or tries to). He likes to play ball. Henry imitates a lot of play now, like with the Little People toys. He also imitates pretending to cook and eat. He likes filling and dumping play.

He's a good, sweet, handsome little guy. I find it so sad that his first year is over, but as we know from having Celia, there are more good things ahead and we will love him even more as he grows.

  1. Happy Birthday (a little belated) to Henry! He's so adorable! Beckett points a lot too, it's pretty cute! I'm so very impressed that y'all are still nursing! We made it to shortly after 13 months, and I miss it sometimes. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!
