2 months

Henry turned 2 months old yesterday. Things have slowed down a bit and time isn't flying by as it did in his first six weeks.

Stats: Our 2-month appointment isn't until Henry's almost three months, so he won't be weighed any time soon. At six weeks he weighed 10 pounds 5 ounces, so he's probably around 11 pounds now. Size 1 diapers and size small cloth diapers are getting too small, and he's already moving on to 3-6 month clothes. He's so much bigger than Celia was at this point! I think she was only seven or eight pounds at two months. Apparently his diet of vegan breast milk is giving him quite an edge :D.

Schedule: This is about the same as it was at one month. Henry is ready for bed and a six hour stretch of sleep around 8:30-9:00 at night. He usually sleeps until 2:30 or 3:00, and starts making noise. I try to get him up to eat without waking him fully, and he usually eats and goes right back to sleep. He usually sleeps for another 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours, eats again, and sleeps a little longer until 7 or 8:00 in the morning.

Our daytime schedule can vary, depending on what we're doing that day. Henry is ready for his morning nap around 9:00, but the length of that nap really varies. If we go out on errands, he sleeps for a long nap- it can be up to 3 hours! That's because he sleeps best in his carseat. If we're at home, it's difficult to get him to have a good nap. Afternoons are especially tricky, because he won't sleep for long but is cranky because he's tired. Last evening he was cranky and tired after dinner and wouldn't take a nap, so I decided to try doing his bedtime routine early to see if an earlier bedtime would work. He went to bed at 7:00, but woke up at 8:00 and then a few times during the night. So that didn't work. Eventually we'll get him to an earlier bedtime. I don't want to rush things, but I'm really looking forward to getting Henry on a consistent nap schedule, and getting him to sleep in the crib.

Development: Henry does a lot of smiling, has started to laugh a little, and does lots of cooing and early babbling. He makes different vowel sounds, CV (consonant vowel, like "ma") and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant, like "agoo") syllable sounds. He is very responsive and starts talking when I talk or sing to him. It's so much fun to interact with him and see him smiling and babbling away. He likes to be carried facing out so he can look around. He likes looking at toys and seeing new things. When we take him out, he stays very calm and quiet and just looks around at everything. Henry's motor movements are becoming a little more controlled and some of his reflexes have lessened. He now startles to sudden noises. We're working on doing more tummy time, but he really doesn't like it so I put him on his stomach for very short periods of time. He can lift his head and shoulders up a bit, but he's not very happy about it. He does have good head control when we hold him upright and when he's sitting.

Other than his fussy times when he's tired and won't nap, Henry is still a very easy baby to take care of. He's generally happy, and very social. He's easy to take places because he does well in the car and likes the stroller as long as we keep him moving. The only thing I worry about is getting him into the crib to sleep, and getting him on a good schedule and able to fall asleep on his own. We will eventually sleep train if we need to. I know I'm just anxious about it because Celia was such a terrible sleeper as an infant. Now that we've gone through it once we will know what to do when the time comes.

  2. I know exactly how you feel about wanting to make sure and "do it right" this time around, regarding good sleep habits and I know you guys will get into a rhythm soon. We are still working on it at nearly 8 months old but it's definitely easier this time around because we started earlier in Nolan's life. Henry is so cute!!
