19 months

Celia is 19 months old today! She is such a happy, sweet, loving, smart, and funny little person.

Stats: I would guess that Celia's just a little over 21 pounds. She fits into most 18 month size clothes, and some are still too big. She just moved up to size 5 shoes. Her hair is still getting a little longer and more curly. She has several teeth, no molars yet. She doesn't let me look in her mouth long enough to see what's in there.

Daily Routine:
We have a fairly routine daily schedule. I love seeing what other people do, so here's ours:
- Between 6 and 7:00: Celia wakes up. She has milk and some of my bagel, and plays or watches Sesame Street while I eat breakfast and check email.
- 8:00: Pita has breakfast. At some point before or after breakfast we both get dressed and ready for the day.
- 8:30-11:30: Plenty of time to run errands, play outside, go to the playground, or go to music class. Celia also has a morning snack.
- By 11:30 we are home and getting ready for lunch.
- 12:00-12:30: I clean up the lunch things and we play for a while before nap time. Celia likes to read her Maisy books before nap and bedtime.
- 12:30-3:00: Celia naps. I eat lunch, clean house and do chores, prep dinner, blog, have an afternoon cup of coffee.
- 3:00-5:00: More time to play or go out.
- 5:00: Celia plays or sits on the counter while I make dinner. Sitting on the counter while I cook is her new favorite thing. It's a whole new world up there! She likes to watch me cook and touch/taste the ingredients.
- 5:30-6:15: Chris gets home. Celia is very excited to see Daddy. She and I have either already had dinner, or it's ready for us all to eat together. We eat, I clean everything up while Chris plays with Pita, and we hang out until bedtime.
- 7:10: Celia has a bottle before heading upstairs. Then it's bath time, pajamas, and bed at 7:30. She may or may not sleep through the night. Last night she decided to celebrate 19 months by waking up at 11:00, refusing to go back to sleep, and finally crying on and off in her crib until almost 1 am. Good times were had by all.

The morning schedule will change quite a bit when I go back to work in a week. I'll be leaving by 7:00 and Chris will get Pita ready and take her to daycare on the days I work. Late afternoons will be busy with me picking her up, unpacking all of our things, packing for the next day, and getting dinner ready.

Speech and Language: Pita's speech is getting easier to understand. There are still some words that unfamiliar people don't get. She now says her name pretty clearly ("Ceeya"), and if you ask what her name is she will tell you her full name (a great party trick). Celia uses mostly 1-2 word utterances. Once in a while she uses more words. One day recently she said "Mama eat pie", and last night at dinner she said "No Celia eat it". She is very social and wants to talk and say hi to everyone she sees. Yesterday we went to the zoo, and she said "hi" to all the animals and blew them kisses. Pita understands almost everything we say. She understands "who", "what", and "where" questions and can answer questions about her day. She follows complex and multi-step directions, and understands spatial concepts like "on", "under", "in" and "behind" when we tell her where to find something.

Cognitive: Celia's pretend play has continued to develop. She's always coming up with new things to do, and with multi-step play schemes. She knows all the basic colors, names several upper case letters and recognizes letters wherever she sees them, and can name the shapes circle, square, star, and triangle. She rote counts from 1-12. She doesn't count consistently with one-to-one correspondence, but has the idea. Pita has several favorite books memorized. She fills in some of the words when we read them to her. She also pretends to read almost anything with print. She loves checking the mailbox with me, and when I give her a piece of mail to hold she looks at it very intently and jabbers away, "reading" it. She still loves playing with her doll and stuffed animals, and hugs and kisses them a lot.

Motor: Pita has mastered drinking from an open cup now and is completely independent with a spoon. She has great balance and coordination and still loves to climb and run around. She is very good at kicking a ball with her right foot. She has finally figured out that she has to turn around and get down from furniture backwards so she won't fall.

Self Help: Celia started using the potty this month! We are not trying to train her though. And, for some reason after a few days of using the potty she didn't want to do it anymore. So we might just put it in the bathroom or put it away until she's more ready. She can tell us when she's peeing or has to poop. Pita can take off her shoes, and can put on her Mary Janes by herself. She helps with dressing and undressing (e.g. stepping into her pants, pulling a shirt over her head), but doesn't do it by herself.

Behavior: While Celia is still very well-behaved and generally easy going, this month we've seen her test her boundaries a little more. She knows that standing up on furniture and going up the stairs by herself are big no-nos, and thinks it's just hilarious to see what happens when she does. I've started doing little time-outs with her, only for those things (because of safety) and for hitting. I give her a warning, then take her to a corner of the living room and tell her she needs to sit for one minute for a time out. She sits for a bit, and usually gets up or looks for me to see if she can get up. I don't talk or give her attention. Then I get her and remind her of the rules, and we go back to playing. She doesn't quite understand what it's all about, but she will eventually. It's not like she's behaving terribly anyway- just testing her limits.

So, another month has gone by. Celia still amazes us with something she does almost daily. Except for some regression with nighttime sleep, this month has been great. We're past a year and a half now, and headed towards two!
