bird lady

Last year we had a hummingbird at our house. I put the feeder back out last month, to be sure it was ready for the hummingbird when it returned. They are supposed to come back up north in May each year. Sure enough, I noticed not one, but two hummingbirds outside today! They never stray far from our deck where the feeder is. They spend their time whizzing around, playing together, talking to each other, and stopping for frequent snacks.

I thought it would be neat to get some pictures of the hummingbirds. It was also quite a challenge, but my zoom lens came in handy. These guys are so tiny, and so fast.

They are beautiful birds. I never realized how colorful they were, since they're so small and rarely stay still long enough for you to get a good look.

In between shots, they were flying around, calling to each other, whizzing and swooping right by my head.

Have you ever heard the whirr of a hummingbird's wings?

I like this one because it shows how tiny the hummingbird is next to the clothespins.

I was determined to get the hummingbirds together in one shot. Let me tell you, that was hard. I finally got one. They are so fast! You can see how they interact with each other. They were playing.

I proudly went inside to show my pictures to Chris. Never did I think I'd have so much interest in birds, of all things. The hummingbirds are just so unique and interesting. Or maybe I'm becoming a crazy bird lady. Yikes.

Stay tuned for my next post, in which I will wax poetic on the subjects of hummingbird houses and mating habits :/
