our town
This week's Show Us Your Life task is to show off your town. We live in a classic New England town. Our town was incorporated in 1735. I won't bore you with all its history. During the Industrial Revolution it became a mill town, along with neighboring ones throughout the river valley. Our town is still thought of as rural, but its population is growing rapidly as urban sprawl expands. But, the things we love about the area remain. We have a beautiful town common surrounded by a historic inn, library, churches, and shops. Chris proposed to me in the gazebo! More on that in a future post. The Common is home to weekly farmers markets, concerts, and other special events during the summer.
Our town is full of beautiful winding, scenic back roads. We also have a golf course, a couple of restaurants, and a small business district with a grocery and a drug store and some local businesses.
There are several state parks within a short drive from our house, and our town has a large amount of conservation land with trails for walking and snow shoeing. In fact, we have a trail right behind our house. Chris and I also like to kayak and our area is full of lakes, reservoirs, and a river for kayaking. We're also surrounded by farms. We have access to local fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and meat straight from the farms where they're raised.
We probably won't live here forever, but it is a great place for families and for anyone who loves outdoor activities. We chose a great place to begin our married life together.

ReplyDeleteI'm Kelly's Mom and i have never been to New England but have always wanted to...maybe one of these days! Meanwhile, I have entered the HGTV New England House give- away everyday.....so maybe I will end up your neighbor!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures!
How beautiful! The winding scenic backroads is how I always picture a New England town to be...These are beautiful photos. The mention of "drug store" & "grocer" made me long for the days of my youth (pre Walgreen's or CVS everywhere) I hope it's still an independent drug store you're talking about. The only grocer in our former suburban neighbord has closed. Sadly.
ReplyDeleteSo glad I stopped by!

I worked as a nanny in Millis, MA for a summer in 2002 and attended a wonderful little church in Bellingham. I have good friends who live there that I still keep in touch with. I would move to New England in a heartbeat! I love Boston!
ReplyDeleteI just came over from Jessica's blog because I saw that you were in New England. We are moving to New England in less than a month. I'm pretty excited although I am a little nervous about the weather. I am not used to a really cold winter.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your pictures of your town. Looks quaint!
